All that, when the Aero 15X could do 2.2 kg for the laptop and 0.5 kg (half the 7520's!) for the power supply.

But here, the weight was ridiculous: 2.8 kg for the laptop, and mostly, a hefty 1 kg for the power brick (why?). The Precision 7520 was available for cheap with a 5 year warranty through a research plan in France.

Some comparison: The P51 was ridiculously expensive in France buying it in the US allowed for a cheap option on a version of it with only the M1200 and 1 year warranty.

The best portable workstation options were the Dell Precision 7520 and Lenovo P51 the best mainstream option was the Aero 15X. Now about the debate on Quadro vs GTX, here is the condensed summary of my month-long search that lead to the current purchase. A black screen like here seems pretty uncommon. I have not tried the realhack registry editing yet, because I wanted to know more about exactly what program calls what routine/library in the inner workings of the SW viewport, to understand the exact nature of that black screen.įrom what I've seen, many Geforce and GTX cards can run Solidworks, even if in some degraded mode. It did not solve the black screen problem. I had the stock Nvidia driver, updated it recently to 385.54 from the Gigabyte website.

Of course, enabling software openGL in SW RX also works, but with ridiculously slow rendering of some useless things like highlighting the edges of a body when hovering over it. Only by right-clicking the SW launch icon and selecting "run on integrated gpu" does it go past the black screen, probably because successfully launching on the i7-7700 GPU. If selecting "integrated graphics" for the Solidworks application in the Nvidia control panel, it still won't work. Clicking in the screen or rotating doesn't solve the issue. When running on discrete graphics card (GTX), I have a black screen in the viewport, even on an empty part. Questions at bottom of post.ĭetails: I tried running SW 20 SP4.1 on my laptop (Gigabyte Aero 15X with GTX 1070 Max-Q).

TL DR: black screen in viewport when opening a part in SW 2017 SP4.1 and running on GTX 1070 Max-Q.
